Nurses Week begins soon so let's celebrate the importance of nurses. May 12th is the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the most famous nurse. This week, we'll sing songs about helpers,  learn some nurse-recommended snack ideas, learn "nurse" in Spanish and sign language, and much more!

By the way, thank a nurse this week. Have Fun!

While your child may not really know what a nurse is if he/she hasn't been to the doc too often, now's the time to teach your toddler what great people they are. Here are some fun "body" activities your child might enjoy - you'll probably have to modify them a bit for their skill level.

Letter of the Week: N - for nurse. Point out things that start with "N" - nectarine, nod, no. Show your toddler a picture of both a capital N and a lower case n. Draw an N on paper and let him/her trace over it, or use your child's finger to draw it in the sandbox or dirt. Use bath tub or refrigerator letters to show him/her this letter as well.

Number of the Week: 12  - When you show your child anything say "12 Cheerios" (or whatever you are counting). Write the number 12 on paper or show your toddler a flash card. Show your child 12 things at a time and count them - "one, two, three, four..."  - so your child gets used to the pattern. If nothing else, hearing the number is good for him/her.

Songs of the Week:  Helper Songs - These songs are about all kinds of helpers - nurses, policemen, firemen, etc. Always great stuff from Preschool Education.

Story of the Week: Nurse - A cute board book in the shape of a nurse. Recently, I searched my local library on-line and placed holds on all the books I wanted and in a couple of days, they were ready to pick up.  Instead of trying to browse the shelves with a busy toddler, I picked them up, checked them out and was on my way.  Here's a link to public libraries in the United States if you'd like to see if your local branch is here. Let me know if you use this link. I don't even browse anymore; I just hold books and go get them when they're ready.

Snack of the Week:  Nurse-Recommended Snacks - These snacks are recommended by Lynn Chavarria, an RN and co-owner of Best Healthy Snacks. She has some great ideas, such as making smoothies or juices (where you can sneak in foods your child might not otherwise eat but are super nutritious) which seem like a treat.

Spanish Words of the Week: "nurse - la enfermera/el enfermero, sick - enfermo/enferma, Where exactly is the pain? -¿En dónde exactamente tiene el dolor?"

Do It Myself: Fix a boo-boo - While you don't want your child trying to put their own band-aid on, it is nice for them to be able to tell you where it hurts. You can teach this by pretending on a stuffed animal or doll and then pretend to "fix" it - with medicine or a bandage. This also teaches about helping others.

Activity of the Week: Old-Fashioned Nurses Hat - You will definitely have to help with this activity but it is fun because so many books still have nurses in the old uniforms, it will help your child recognize nurses in the future.

Yoga Pose: Warrior I Pose -  Because nurses help us fight sickness and injury, we picked a Warrior pose this week. Plus your little one will feel like a warrior after surviving a shot. This link is from  Yoga Journal.  PS - Our kids always liked the Yoga Kids series if you'd like more ideas for doing yoga with your toddler.

Sign Language Sign of the Week: NurseSickHurt (your child can make the sign where it hurts), Better.   If your toddler is still learning how to talk, sign language can be a great way for him/her to communicate.  And as they get older, they'll pick up signs faster and it can be more of a fun thing versus a way to communicate.

Remember to give your toddler/preschooler a hug and tell him/her you love them. Hope you have a wonderful week!
